PhD Position in Ribosome formation in vitro

Two pre-doctoral positions are available at Heidelberg University Biochemistry Center (BZH) as part of an ERC Advanced Grant

The positions will be available from 1 September 2017 for an initial period of 3 years. Payment will be according to the German TV-L 13 (part-time). In the funded project, entitled Eukaryotic Ribosome Assembly, we study the earliest steps during eukaryotic ribosome assembly, focusing on

1) Development of in vitro assays to reveal the transition from the 90S pre-ribosome to the earliest pre-40S particle, exploiting the thermostable nature of the 90S pre-ribosome from a eukaryotic thermophile

2) Systematic search for ribosome biogenesis intermediates in Chaetomium thermophilum that mark the 90S>pre-40S transition. This will also require generation of dominant-negative mutants in Chaetomium thermophilum, which map in 90S factors in order to exploit them for isolation and structural characterization of novel types of pre-ribosomal particles.

Expected profile: Applicants should be highly motivated scientists with experience in biochemistry, molecular biology or structural biology. Application process: Please email your CV, statement of research interests and contact information of references to
