PhD Position in Quantitative phenotyping of bacterial spore traits by high-resolution microscopy

Description:

Our lab studies complex adaptive traits (CATs) in bacteria with the goal to understand, to control and to engineer such traits. In response to fluctuations in nutrient availability, many bacterial species adapt by switching between a proliferative vegetative and a dormant endospore state. Common to both processes is a striking degree of phenotypic heterogeneity. Due to the significance of this phenomenon for both fundamental and applied research, we aim to elucidate its underlying mechanisms and to study how this contributes to the organization of the population in fluctuating environments.

This project specifically aims to establish a high-throughput workflow for quantitative spore phenotyping based on fluorescence time-lapse microscopy and SEM array tomography (in collaboration with R. Schröder) in order to identify and validate determinants of traits of interest on the molecular and structural level.
