C: Information Processing in Complex Multi-cellular Networks

Research area C goes beyond the level of the single cell, investigating signaling events and pathways controlling intercellular interactions and, at the highest level, behavior.
The focus is on two different, yet conceptually and methodologically tightly linked biological areas. One concerns the development of differentiated and functionally connected cell assemblies in non-neural and neural tissues. The second focus is on how signaling systems and regulatory modules are used in the fully developed nervous system to process information and to induce adaptive changes in the functional organization of neuronal networks that are important for learning and memory.
